Assessment for Learning
In Airyhall we are continually looking at ways in which to improve the quality of learning and teaching. Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning, involving both teachers and pupils. Assessment occurs through observation, discussion, questioning and oral written tasks. Research tells us that people learn best when they are actively involved in their own learning through:
•understanding clearly what they are going to learn
•knowing what they have to do to achieve that learning goal
•thinking and talking about their learning with their teachers, peers and parents
•recognising successful learning
•using quality feedback to make improvements and decide on next steps
Personal Learning Plans
To encourage children to think and talk about their learning each child has a Personal Learning Plan. This is completed following one-to-one discussions between pupil and teacher. This discussion involves the child in celebrating what is going well and identifying areas to work on. Teacher and pupil agree targets and these are recorded on the plan and which is taken home to talk about with parents.
